ARRAS AND MESSINES 1917: VCs of the First World War
The Arras Offensive of 1917 was an attempt to break the stalemate of the opposing armies on the Western Front; it was initially successful, but at a high cost. The next move against the Germans was an assault on the Messine Ridge in June 1917. By the end of July, 50 Victoria Crosses had been awarded, including many to troops from the Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand forces. Illus.
