ESCAPE FROM VILLINGEN, 1918
In July 1918, American aviator George Puryear shot down a German observation plane and then, in an act of bravado, landed to accept the crew's surrender. In fact, he had landed in German territory, and was captured. Weeks later he led a mass escape from the prison at Villengen. This is his story. Photos.
