Novel. Prague, 19th century. Tension seethes between Czechs and the German-speaking population and the Jews are being caught in the middle. The drug-addicted, absinthe-drinking, tubercular Addie, Count Arco, buys a house in the Jewish Quarter and fights the bureauocracy trying to demolish the neighborhood. Meanwhile, some of his prostitute friends have been murdered, and he is swept into the investigation.
