James Gairdner was an American citizen who joined the British army's 95th Rifles and subsequently served from the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo in 1812 until the end of the Peninsular War in 1814. He then fought in the Waterloo campaign and formed part of the Army of Occupation. Historian Gareth Glover utilizes Gairdner's journal and letters to present his story. Illus.
