In December of 1937, the Chinese capital, Nanjing, fell to the Japanese army. Over the course of six weeks, hundreds of thousands of civilians and prisoners of war were killed. At the onset of the atrocities, Singberg, a Danish supervisor at a cement plant, opens the factory gates and welcomes 10,000 Chinese civilians to safety, beyond the reach of the Japanese. Illus.
