CHAINS AND FREEDOM: Or, the Life and Adventures of Peter Wheeler

Wheeler's 1839 work is a very interesting variant from the usual slave memoir in that he was born in the north--New Jersey--and illegally sold and taken to New York State, then grew to adulthood held in slavery in western New York. His memoir is direct evidence that slavery was not merely a Southern aberration.
