MAN OF CONFIDENCE: Kenneth J. Kurtenbach--WWII's Longest-Serving American POW Camp Leader

At just 21 years old, U.S. airman Kurtenback was captured and tortured by the Gestapo in 1942. He spent the rest of the war in Stalag 17-B, yet he refused to give up. As a spokesman for over 4,000 American POWs, he battled daily for food, fair treatment, and basic survival. Illus.
