Gee joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940 and was posted to the U.S.S. Houston. During the battle of the Java Sea, the Houston was sunk and Gee was taken prisoner. After his liberation, he was sent to Guantanamo Bay Naval Hospital, where he met Rosalie Hamric Smith, a nurse who helped him record his experiences as part of his treatment. Photos.
