James Gee joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940 and after training he was posted to the U.S.S. Houston. After his liberation, he was sent to Guantanamo Bay Naval Hospital, Cuba, where he met Rosalie Hamric Smith who was a nurse in the Psychiatric Ward and helped him record his experiences as part of his treatment.
