Lime is a material essential to construction and agriculture but requires building a large stone kiln to produce. The most recent record, from the 1875 county atlas, lists over 500 kilns built in Lancaster County alone. Today, Miller has explored the county and found evidence of 128 extant kilns in various states of repair. Fully illustrated in color.
