At the beginning of 1953, the Cold War had entered its most deadly phase. The Iron Curtain had descended across Europe. The U.S. and the Soviets entered a bloody proxy war on the Korean peninsula. The pace of the nuclear arms race became frenetic. And, for the first time, the Doomsday Clock was set at two minutes to midnight.
